What Is VIVOTIF1?

VIVOTIF is indicated for active oral immunisation against typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi), in adults and children aged five years and older.
This vaccine should be used in accordance with official recommendations.

VIVOTIF works in three ways

VIVOTIF protects against Salmonella Typhi by mimicking the response to natural infection and stimulating local, cellular and systemic/humoral immunity 2-5

  1. Local immune response: IgA
  2. Cellular mediated immunity:
    macrophages/cytotoxic T lymphocytes
  3. Systemic/humoral immune responses: IgG

Three year Protective Efficacy Demonstrated in Clinical Studies

The protective efficacy of VIVOTIF was demonstrated in several large-scale field trials involving more than 500,000 subjects2

Randomised, placebo-controlled study in an endemic population (Chile)

Established Safety Profile1

VIVOTIF is generally well tolerated with a low incidence of adverse events.

Reporting Adverse Events

Dosage and Administration1

1 capsule taken on Days 1, 3, and 5 may provide up to 3 years of protection against typhoid fever. Complete vaccination is comprised of the ingestion of three capsules. Optimal immune response may not be achieved unless the entire vaccination schedule is completed.

Revaccination is recommended at three years following the most recent vaccination for all individuals.

  • Protection achieved 7-10 days after the last dose for adults and children aged 5 years and over
  • Oral administration with 3 capsules over 5 days, each to be taken approximately 1 hour before a meal with cold or lukewarm water
  • Refrigerate at 2°C – 8°C

In the case of travel from a non-endemic area to an area where typhoid is endemic, Green Book recommends a booster consisting of the 3 doses of VIVOTIF be administered every 3 years.6

VIVOTIF is supplied in a single foil blister containing 3 doses of vaccine in a single package.

Storage and Handling

  • VIVOTIF should be stored between 2°C and 8°C.
  • Keep the blister pack within the outer carton to store away from light.
